How Long Does Keratin Last? (Singapore 2026 Guide)

A keratin treatment usually lasts about three to four months in Singapore, and anywhere from two to six months depending on the formula and how you look after it. It doesn’t stop working overnight. It fades gradually with every wash, starting at the roots, where new frizzy growth comes in.

So the real question isn’t only “how long”, it’s “how do I stretch it”. Singapore makes that harder than most places: the Meteorological Service Singapore puts our mean relative humidity at around 82%, often above 90% before sunrise. That’s exactly the frizz keratin is fighting, every single day.

New to keratin? Start with our ultimate guide to keratin treatments, then come back here. This guide covers how long each type of keratin lasts, a month-by-month picture of what to expect, what shortens it, and the habits that genuinely make it last longer.

How Long Does Each Type of Keratin Last?

Not all keratin treatments are built to last the same time. The formula is the biggest factor you can choose.

Type of keratin treatment Typical longevity Notes
Express / mini keratin About 6 to 8 weeks Shorter, cheaper, a good trial run
Formaldehyde-free keratin About 2 to 4 months Gentler, the most common option now
Formaldehyde-based (e.g. some Brazilian blowouts) About 4 to 6 months Longest lasting, but releases formaldehyde when heated
In Singapore’s humidity, on average About 3 to 4 months With sensible aftercare

The longest-lasting formulas tend to be the ones that release formaldehyde when heated, which the US FDA has flagged as a safety concern for clients and salon staff. Ask your salon which formula they use. For most people, a formaldehyde-free treatment that lasts a little less is the better trade.

For comparison: rebonding doesn’t fade at all on treated hair, which is one reason people weigh it up against keratin. See our keratin vs rebonding comparison.

What to Expect, Month by Month

Everyone’s hair is different, but this is the typical pattern for a standard keratin treatment in Singapore.

Week 1: settling in.
Hair is at its smoothest and shiniest. Follow your stylist’s first-wash timing carefully (more on that below), as this is when the treatment is most fragile.

Month 1: the best stretch.
Blow-drying takes a fraction of the time. Hair air-dries smoother, and the frizz on humid days is noticeably calmer.

Months 2 to 3: still smooth, roots returning.
Your lengths stay manageable, but new growth at the roots starts to show its natural texture. Many people barely notice yet.

Months 3 to 4: fading.
Frizz creeps back, especially after washing or on very humid days. Blow-dry time starts climbing again. This is when most people rebook.

Month 5 and beyond: mostly worn off.
Only a light smoothing effect remains on the ends. Hair goes back to behaving the way it did before.

Signs Your Keratin Is Wearing Off

  • Blow-drying takes noticeably longer again
  • Frizz at the roots and hairline, especially on humid days
  • Hair puffs up after washing instead of falling smooth
  • Ends feel drier and less slippery
  • Your hair no longer air-dries smooth

Once two or three of these show up, you’re usually in rebooking territory.

What Makes Keratin Wear Off Faster

Habit or factor Why it shortens keratin What to do instead
Sulphate shampoos Strip the smoothing coat with every wash Switch to a sulphate-free shampoo
Washing every day Every wash wears the treatment down Wash two to three times a week if you can
Chlorine and salt water Break down the coating quickly Wet hair with fresh water first, rinse straight after
Washing too soon after the appointment The treatment hasn’t fully set Follow your stylist’s first-wash timing
Very hot water Opens the hair surface Wash in lukewarm water
Clarifying or anti-dandruff shampoos Often contain strong cleansers Use only when you need to, and ask your stylist
Heavy sweating and humidity Constant moisture swells the hair Tie hair loosely for workouts, rinse and dry soon after

Can I Wash My Hair After a Keratin Treatment?

It depends on the formula, so always follow your stylist’s instructions. Traditional keratin treatments usually need 48 to 72 hours without washing, tying or tucking your hair behind your ears, so the treatment can set. Many newer formulas let you wash the same day or the next day. Ask before you leave the salon.

After that first wash, a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner are the single biggest thing you can do to protect your treatment.

How to Make Your Keratin Treatment Last Longer

1. Use sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner. This matters more than anything else.
2. Wash less often. Two or three times a week is ideal. Dry shampoo helps between washes.
3. Protect it from the pool and the sea. Wet hair with fresh water first, and rinse right after.
4. Keep heat styling low. You’ll rarely need a flat iron now, so skip it.
5. Colour before your keratin, not right after. Many stylists colour first so the keratin seals over it. Ask yours.
6. Book a top-up at three to four months, before the frizz fully returns.

Is It Worth Redoing Every Few Months?

At a typical Singapore price of about $240 per session for short hair, a keratin every three to four months works out to roughly $60 to $80 a month. Our keratin price guide has the full breakdown by hair length.

If that feels like a lot of upkeep, and your hair is healthy and uncoloured, rebonding lasts longer for less per month, but it’s a permanent change. If you like your hair’s natural movement, keratin’s gradual fade is actually the point: nothing to grow out, no commitment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a keratin treatment last in Singapore?

Most keratin treatments last about three to four months in Singapore’s humidity. Express treatments last around six to eight weeks, formaldehyde-free formulas two to four months, and formaldehyde-based formulas up to about six months. Washing habits and shampoo choice make a big difference to where you land in that range.

How long after keratin can I wash my hair?

Follow your stylist’s instructions, because it depends on the formula. Traditional keratin treatments usually need 48 to 72 hours before the first wash, with no tying or tucking hair behind your ears. Many newer formulas allow washing the same day or the next day. When you do wash, use a sulphate-free shampoo.

Why did my keratin wear off so fast?

The usual culprits are sulphate shampoos, washing every day, chlorine or salt water, and washing too soon after the appointment. Express treatments also fade faster by design, often within six to eight weeks. Singapore’s high humidity adds pressure too, so aftercare matters more here than in drier climates.

How often should I get a keratin treatment?

Most people rebook every three to four months, when frizz starts returning at the roots and blow-drying takes longer again. Going much more often than that isn’t necessary. At around $240 per session for short hair, that works out to roughly $60 to $80 a month.

Does keratin last longer than rebonding?

No. Rebonding permanently straightens the hair it treats, and only the new growth needs a touch-up every four to six months. Keratin is a smoothing coat that fades over two to six months. The trade-off is that keratin is gentler and fully reversible, while rebonding is a permanent change.
