CNY 2027 Hair: Colours, Cuts & When to Book Before 6 Feb

Chinese New Year 2027 falls on Saturday 6 February and Sunday 7 February, with Monday 8 February as a public holiday. That means reunion dinner on Friday 5 February, a long visiting weekend, and a lot of family photos.

It also means every salon in Singapore gets very busy, very fast. The last two weeks before CNY are often fully booked, and plenty of people want their hair done before the new year rather than after, because of the old custom of not cutting hair in the first days of the year.

So this guide is hair only: when to book your colour, your rebonding or keratin, and your cut, plus a few festive colour ideas and what it all costs. (Doing nails and a facial too? Our what to book before CNY guide covers the rest of the look.)

Why your hair comes first before CNY

A quick cultural note. Many families follow the tradition of not cutting hair in the early days of the new year, because “hair” (发) sounds like the “fa” in prosperity (发财), and cutting it is said to snip away good fortune. Whether you follow it strictly or just for your grandmother’s peace of mind, the result is the same: everyone wants a fresh cut before the new year, not after. Many salons also close or run shorter hours over the first days of CNY.

2027 is the Year of the Goat (some call it the Sheep), a Fire Goat year in the traditional calendar. Red and gold are the classic festive colours for luck and celebration in Chinese tradition, and feng shui guides each year suggest their own “lucky colours” too. Treat those as fun lore, not rules. The best colour is the one you will love in photos.

The look: what to book

1. Hair colour (the big one)

Hair colour (the big one)

A new hair colour is the most popular pre-CNY refresh. Book it 2 to 3 weeks before, so the tone has time to settle and you still have room to go back for a toner or a tweak if it comes out brassier or darker than you wanted.

Festive-friendly ideas to ask your colourist about:

  • Warm red or burgundy: the most CNY of all. A deep wine or cherry-brown reads rich without being loud.
  • Copper: bright and warm, great on lighter or already-lightened hair.
  • Chestnut or mocha brown: a soft, glossy warm-up if you want “fresh” rather than “new”.
  • Gold-toned highlights: a few highlights or a hand-painted balayage in honey or caramel to catch the light in photos.

Covering greys? A root touch-up 1 to 2 weeks out keeps the regrowth invisible through the visiting days. Our hair colour price guide and balayage price guide break down costs by length.

2. Rebonding or keratin (book earliest)

Rebonding or keratin

If you want sleek, frizz-free hair for the new year, hair straightening (rebonding, keratin smoothing and Japanese straightening all live here) needs the most lead time. Book it 3 to 4 weeks before.

Why so early? After rebonding you usually can’t wash, tie or clip your hair for about three days (here’s our day-by-day guide to washing after rebonding), and the hair needs time to settle before anything else goes on it. If you want colour as well, the usual advice is rebond first, then colour about two weeks later (why, in our rebond-then-colour guide). So a rebond plus colour combo means starting in early January.

Not sure which one you need? Read keratin vs rebonding before you book, and our rebonding price guide for costs by length.

3. The cut

Haircut

Book your haircut 5 to 10 days before CNY. Close enough that it still looks fresh on reunion night, far enough that a slightly-too-short fringe has a few days to grow into itself. It also lands you safely before the “no cutting” days.

If you’re colouring too, cut after the colour (or in the same visit), so your stylist shapes the final result, not hair that’s about to change.

4. A treatment to finish

Hair treatment

A conditioning hair treatment around 1 week before puts the shine back after colour or straightening, and pairs well with your cut appointment. Ask for one suited to coloured or chemically treated hair.

5. Reunion-dinner styling

Dinner styling at a salon

For the big night, a wash and blow-dry or simple hair styling on 5 February (the eve) or the morning of CNY gives you that bouncy, photo-ready finish. Eve-of-CNY slots tend to go first, so book this one when you book everything else.

When to book what: your CNY 2027 hair timeline

When Date (CNY = Sat 6 Feb 2027) Book this

One more tip: ask about festive pricing when you book. Some salons add a CNY surcharge in the weeks before the new year, and others advertise that they don’t. Either way, it’s better to know at booking than at the counter.

What it costs

These are starting prices from the published menus of Singapore salons we’ve captured (November 2026). Long or thick hair, senior stylists and premium products cost more, so treat them as the “from” end.
